The Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter, or BARCS, has a few tips to help you teach your kitten how to use the litter box. Start by teaching her what’s in it. You can do this through positive reinforcement: Give treats for good behavior and take them away from her if she doesn’t go in the litter box. Once she starts going inside on her own, try using a scented treat that is not food-based. Or simply put some of these items into the litterbox so that it smells better – catnip leaves, lavender oil, dryer sheets – anything that will make it more appealing for cats to go there. Try changing the location of where you keep these items as well as how much time passes between when they were placed there and when your cat goes there. If all else fails, keepers recommend putting your cat outside occasionally during times when he seems reluctant about going in his bathroom spot.
