HOW MUCH TIME DO KITTENS NEED TO SLEEP?
A kitten must sleep eight to ten hours a day. This is the minimum amount of time needed for them to stay healthy and happy. When kittens don’t get enough rest, they can become ill or even die.
WHAT EFFECT DOES NOT GETTING ENOUGH SLEEP HAVE ON A CAT?
When cats are deprived of sleep, it disrupts their natural circadian rhythm (internal body clock). Their bodies can’t tell when it is daytime because their internal clocks think it’s night-time all the time! Cats will suffer from “kitten insomnia syndrome” if left unattended outside during daylight hours without sleeping at least 8-10 hours per day. The symptoms include lethargy, loss of appetite/weight gain, excessive grooming behavior, cage spraying/urinating in inappropriate areas (couch etc.), anxiety and aggressive tendencies towards other animals in the household including humans which could lead to serious injury. Your cat may also develop behavioral issues such as aggression towards people or pets in your home when trying to obtain enough rest during the day since this is an attempt by its body to compensate for lack of sleep!
