Question: what is cat nip?
Answer: Catnip (Lepidium meyenii), also known as “Catmint” and commonly called Mee-Yow, is a perennial herbaceous plant found in the Americas. It has been used for centuries by many different indigenous cultures as a calming agent for domestic cats. The active component of catnip is (+)-trans-Nepetalactone, which binds to an olfactory receptor on the nerve cells called G protein coupled receptors 1 and 2 (GPCR1 & GPCR2). When cats sniff or lick catnip, it stimulates their nervous system causing them to become hyperactive and excitable.
