If you find a stray kitten or other small animal, it should be taken to your local veterinary practice for assessment. This is particularly important if the animal is injured and needs medical attention.
Some animals can’t be returned to their owner but may need veterinary care while they wait for a home that will take them in permanently. Other animals could be put down due to their injuries or because there was no-one who could take them in, or both. Cat experts say that all cats should have microchips implanted when they are young so that their owners can be located if needed (see our factsheet on microchipping).
